Waterproof Jacket Care: How to Clean and Protect Your Shell

Proper waterproof jacket care is vital to maintaining the performance of Henri-Lloyd’s technical sailing shells, and the same applies to all waterproof shell layers such as salopettes. Our garments use a C0 fluorocarbon-free DWR finish - a sustainable alternative to traditional coatings that helps reduce harmful runoff into marine ecosystems. Regular washing and maintenance remove salt, dirt, and abrasion, protecting both the waterproof and breathable fabric. With the right care, your gear retains its eco-friendly performance and delivers lasting protection on and off the water.

Step 1 - Rinse After Use

Rinse thoroughly with fresh water after sailing to remove salt and grime buildup.

Step 2 - Machine Wash When Needed

Use cold gentle cycle, non-bio liquid detergent or soap halles. Avoid bleach, softeners, biological cleaners.

Step 3 - Zip & Secure

Close all fastners before washing. Turn garment right-side out for seam protection.

Step 4 - Dry Gently

Tumble dry low 15-20 minutes or iron on low (no steam) with protective towel barrier.

Step 5 - Re-apply DWR

If water stops beading on the surface, re-apply PFC-free DWR and activate with low-heat drying.

Step 6 - Store Properly

Hang dry completely, then store loosley in cool, dry, well-ventilated storage space.

Step 7 - Inspect Regularly

Check for loose threads, tears, delamination. Repair early to prevent worsening.

Step 8 - Professional Reproofing (Optional)

Older gear may benefit from expert cleaning and DWR reapplication for optimal waterproof performance.
